The »Cirque du Bauhaus« opens its gates on May 22nd 2019 at the Zeiss-Planetarium Jena and presents a mind-blowing combination of digital 360° projection, live orchestra music, theater and performance art. Inside of a virtual circus tent with the size of the Planetarium’s dome the show contributes greatly to the Bauhaus centenary and not only talks about classic Bauhaus-topics but continues the Bauhaus-legacy with new media. Works by students and media artists merge with the sounds of the »Cirque du Bauhaus«-Orchestra, which was founded especially for this particular show.

Look forward to experiencing a spectacle with guest star and entertainer Andreas Max Martin, the »Cirque du Bauhaus«-Orchestra comprised of fourteen musicians playing original compositions by Prof. Acácio Peidade, several interactive »Kunstfiguren« inspired by Oskar Schlemmer, a dancer with a costume made out of light and many more surprises. At the premiere on May 22nd 2019, the president of the Hochschule für Musik FRANZ LISZT Weimar, Prof. Christoph Stölzl, will give a short welcome speech.

The premiere of the »Cirque du Bauhaus« is also the Opening Night of the 13th FullDome Festival at the Zeiss-Planetarium Jena, which is one of the most important get-togethers of the international Fulldome and immersive media world. Live-Performances which expand the genre of Fulldome-Theater and 360° music-theater have been one of the festival’s specialties for years and may safely be called a Thuringian invention.

The idea to bring the Bauhaus into a circus tent and stage it in a 360° space was explored during the Bauhaus.Semester 2018/19, initiated by the director of the Bauhaus-Univeristät Weimar. The project was guided by  Prof. Dr. Tiago de Oliveira Pinto (HfM, UNESCO »Transcultural Music Studies«) and Prof. Micky Remann (Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, »Immersive Media«) as well as the contract-teacher Liese Endler (Media artist Bauhaus-Universität Weimar) and asked students from both universities to tell the story of the fictitious »Cirque du Bauhaus« with visual and auditive episodes. To make proper use of the possibilities within an immersive music theater, the boundaries between real Bauhaus-references and their free interpretation were set freely. Under the dome of the »Cirque du Bauhaus«, virtual figures will meet real ones, historic references clash with futuristic visions, dreams, nightmares and orchestral music to form a Gesamtkunstwerk in 360 degrees.

The concept of the show emerged from the cooperation of Hochschule für Musik FRANZ LISZT and Bauhaus-Universität Weimar due to an invitation of the FullDome Festival Foundation, which is also the organizer of the 13th FullDome Festival. The project is made possible thanks to the friendly support of Thüringer Staatskanzlei (100 Jahre Bauhaus) as well as Kulturstiftung des Freistaates Thüringen.
